Creating a Plant-Filled, Pet-Friendly Home

safe houseplants for cats and dogs

At Bloomscape, we want to make it as simple as possible to help you find non-toxic houseplants that are safe for your fur-babies. That’s why we’ve included a pet-friendly filter on our shop page, and always maintain a good selection of high-quality, healthy safe houseplants for cats and dogs.

Megan Rose, dog mom, new plant mom, and co-founder of the dog mom blog, galsbestfriend.com, @galsbestfriend, talks to us about creating a plant-filled, pet-safe, beautiful home.

Tell us about Gal’s Best Friend. Who are you? How did it get started?

The Start of Gal’s Best Friend started in 2007, Megan and Chelsea met at the Texas Rangers Six Shooters tryouts. One year later, Megan met Jessica when they rushed the same sorority. Soon after, all 3 of us gals were part of the best baseball club in the country! We grew to be great friends who shared the same interests; puppies, fashion, and Justin Bieber. But if you would have asked us if we’d still be close friends and obsessed with the same things nine years later… Well, yes. Fast forward to 2015 when one of us gals had a random dream late one night, that the 3 of us started a dog blog together. Crazy, right? Because we all live in different cities and only see each other here and there when one or the other is in town. So, between the miles, the husbands and boyfriends, the jobs, and (more importantly) the dogs, we don’t know how this dream became reality. But it did! And we are thankful to The Lord for it. It has brought us back together (not that we ever went that far) and it has given us a reason to talk every day and see each other every chance we can. We’re grateful that our friendship has been strengthened through this blogging process. We’ve learned more about each other and ourselves.

You all live in different cities, how are your lifestyles different?

I have 3 dogs and live with my boyfriend in Brooklyn. I am a community manager for a handful of dog companies, the dogs and I are always out and about at some event or fundraiser. Jessica lives in Dallas with her boyfriend and their two pups! Jessica is a full-time elementary school teacher with a side life of dog mom blogging and bar-hopping on the weekend with friends (dog-friendly bars of course!) Chelsea has lived in Salt Lake City these past few years, but just recently moved back to the Dallas area. She and her husband have two pups and a little boy and one on the way! Chelsea is a full-time mom and dog blogger!

There’s a lot of buzz around Plant Moms and Dog Moms…can you be both?

100%! If you can keep dogs alive, you can keep plants alive! They are one in the same! They both need to be fed, cared for and loved on!

How would you describe your style?

My style is very clean and airy. I love my home to feel bright and open—with a touch of homey.

How do you create a space that’s beautiful AND dog-friendly?

These days, companies are making it so easy to do that! I make sure that almost everything in our home is both beautiful and fits our style as well as 100% dog-friendly and safe.

And on that note, how do you deal with shedding!??!

UGH! We get bi-weekly baths and brushed a lot! I also do a good vacuuming sesh twice a week.

How many houseplants do you have?

We have 5! They are named after The Backstreet Boys! Nick, Brain, Kevin, AJ, and Howie!

Why do you like having plants in your home?

They make me feel happy! There is just something about bringing the outside in that brightens up a home.

What’s your favorite plant and why?

To be honest, I am a new Plant Mom and I am still learning about them! But as of now, my favorite is the Majesty Palm from Bloomscape…. We named him Nick (my fave BSB).

What tips do you have for plants with pets?

Making sure you know what you are getting. I had no idea that there were SO many plants that are bad for our fur-babies!
